This Week . . .
The No. 18 UCLA women's tennis team (3-5, 2-0 Pac-10) will host three matches this week beginning with No. 10 Pepperdine this Tuesday at the LATC at 1:30 p.m. The Bruins will be looking to avenge a 5-2 earlier season loss to the Waves (5-3) back on Feb. 10. On Friday, UCLA will host New Mexico at the LATC beginning at 1:30 p.m. The Lobos enter Friday's match with a 5-4 overall record. The Bruins round out the three-match homestand against No. 12 USC on Saturday. The Women of Troy are 8-3 overall after beating Oregon last Friday.
Last Week . . .
On Friday, the No. 18 Bruins were upset by No. 34 Fresno State, 5-2 at the LATC. The Bulldogs won the doubles point then took four of six singles matches en route to the victory. The Bruins received singles victories from Petya Marinova in the No. 2 position and Mariko Fritz-Krockow in the No. 4 slot. UCLA was supposed to host Oregon on Saturday, however the match was moved to Sunday and eventually postponed due to rain both days. A make up date has not yet been determined.
UCLA in the ITA Team and Individual Rankings . . .
As a team, UCLA checked in at No. 18 in the ITA rankings released last week. New team rankings will be released this Wednesday. Individual rankings were released on Monday and Sara Walker is ranked 15th in the country, followed by Catherine Hawley at No. 82 and Petya Marinova at No. 85. In doubles, Lauren Fisher and Marinova check in at No. 19, while Walker and Zana Zlebnik are ranked 34th.
Bruin Injury Update . . .
Sara Walker, Cristina Popescu and Zana Zlebnik are all sidelined with injuries. Walker has a stress reaction in her left foot and has missed the last four UCLA matches (all losses). Popescu, a former Bruin No. 1 player, hasn't played all season due to a knee injury suffered last year. Zlebnik, who played in the fall and at No. 3 singles in UCLA's first two matches of the season, is sidelined with a back injury.
Walker Back Among Nation's Elite . . .
Prior to her injury, Bruin sophomore Sara Walker moved into the ITA singles rankings two weeks ago, checking in at No. 12. She hasn't played in UCLA's last four matches and is now at No. 15 nationally. In early February, she reached the quarterfinals at the Rolex National Indoors, then defeated No. 32 Ipek Senoglu of Pepperdine, 7-6(4), 6-1 in a dual match on Feb. 10.
March Madness at the LATC . . .
From March 2-11, UCLA will host three non-conference matches at the LATC, including a showdown with crosstown rival USC. The Bruins kickoff the home stand with New Mexico on Fri. Mar. 2, followed by a match with the Women of Troy on Sat. Mar. 3. On Mar. 10, UCLA welcomes the University of Miami to the LATC and on Sat. Mar. 11, the Bruins will take on the University of Texas. The Longhorns, ranked fifth in the latest ITA rankings, will be looking for revenge against the Bruins as UCLA knocked Texas out of last year's NCAA Tournament.
