Susdorf Lifts UCLA to 13 Inning Victory Over #4 Arizona State, 8-7

April 19, 2003

Final Stats

TEMPE, AZ - Billy Susdorf's two-out double in the top of the 13th inning would give UCLA (19-23) an 8-7 victory over fourth-ranked Arizona State (38-9) in front of 2,678 fans at Packard Stadium on Friday night.

The sophomore outfielder hit a two-out double over left-fielder Nick Walsh's head after Warren Trott was hit by a pitch and Brett McMillan was intentionally walked. Both would score to give UCLA a 8-6 lead heading into the bottom of the 13th inning. Reliever David Johnson would pitch the final inning, to earn his second save of the year. He allowed one run, which scored during a double play and struck out Joel Bocchi for the games' final out.

Scoring would begin in the top of the third inning as Jeff Abney singled to lead-off. Preston Griffin's seventh home run of the season would drive them both in to give UCLA a 2-0 advantage.

The Bruin lead would be short lived as a lead-off walk to Tuffy Gosewisch and a double from Nick Walsh would give the Sun Devils runners at second and third with no outs. A wild pitch from UCLA starter Wes Whisler would allow Gosewisch to score and Walsh to advance to third. Despite consecutive strikeouts from Whisler, another wild pitch would bring Walsh across home plate. Back-to-back walks would once again put two Sun Devils on base and a single from Mike Guerrero would drive in Jeff Larish to give ASU a 3-2 lead.

The lead would change hands again as UCLA scored two in the top of the fourth. Ryan McCarthy reached base on an error to lead-off before Brandon Averill's eighth double of the season once again gave the Bruins runners at second and third with no outs. A RBI-single from Abney brought in McCarthy before Averill came home on a fielder's choice.

A RBI-single from Mike Guerrero drove in Dustin Pedroia in the bottom of the fifth to even the score at 4-4 after five innings of action. Pedroia had reached on a double to right center, which marked his 27th double of the season.

The Bruins re-claimed the lead in the top of the seventh inning as three consecutive singles from Brett McMillan, Billy Susdorf and Whisler loaded the bases with one out. ASU reliever Ryan Schroyer came in to walk Matt Thayer and walk in McMillan to give UCLA a 5-4 advantage. However, Schroyer would retire the next two batters to get out of the inning.

For the second straight night, the Bruins and Sun Devils would head into the ninth inning tied as a two-out triple from Nick Walsh drove in Frank Mesa, who had doubled earlier in the inning.

However, the outcome would not be the same as Schroyer retired three straight Bruins. In the bottom of the ninth, Jeff Larish reached base on a one-out error before Guerrero moved him to third with a double to left field. Yet, a shallow pop-up and a strikeout from reliever Doug Silva would end the frame and send it to extra innings. Neither team could post a run in the tenth inning, but Susdorf would put UCLA ahead in the top of the 11th with a solo home run over the left field fence. The 6-5 lead would not hold for the Bruins as Andre Ethier sent a ball over the right field fence in the bottom of the frame to send it to the 12th inning.

UCLA will look to sweep the three-game Pac-10 series tomorrow when they meet in a 1:00 p.m. contest. Right-hander Casey Janssen (3-4) will get the start on the mound for the Bruins as he will face off with Sun Devil right-hander Ben Thurmond (3-0).
