Tennis Powerhouses Collide This Tuesday

Tennis Powerhouses Collide This Tuesday . . .
Lexus Gauntlet points will be on the line this Tuesday when No. 8 UCLA (9-3) and No. 23 USC (6-4) face off in a men's tennis showdown at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins and Trojans have accounted for two of the four last NCAA titles, with UCLA winning last year and USC claiming its championship in 2002. The two teams split the series last year, with each winning on its home court. UCLA leads the all-time series 61-32. Live stats will be available.

117th Pacific Coast Doubles Championships Begin Thursday . . .
UCLA will be competing at the 117th Pacific Coast Doubles Championships this Thursday through Sunday at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club in La Jolla, Calif. The tournament is an open event and does not count in the player statistics throughout the year. Several high-level junior and open players will be competing in the tournament alongside some of the top college players in the country. UCLA's entrants are: Jeremy Drean / Michael Look, Haythem Abid / Chris Surapol, Philipp Gruendler / Luben Pampoulov, and Grant Chen / Jaysen Chung. Bruins Coming Off Sweep of Arizona Schools . . .
UCLA is fresh off a pair of 6-1 victories over Arizona and Arizona State over the weekend. The Bruins lost the doubles point against the Wildcats on Friday, however battled back to win six singles matches. UCLA had a much better showing in doubles against ASU the following day, winning all three matches to claim the point. The Bruins then went on to post five of six wins in singles play to take the 6-1 decision.

UCLA in the Fila/ITA Rankings . . .
UCLA dropped a spot to No. 8 in the latest Fila/ITA Rankings released on Feb. 22. Individual rankings were also released for the first time in more than a month. Benjamin Kohlloeffel remains at No. 3 in singles play. He is followed by No. 75 Michael Look and No. 82 Mathieu Dehaine. In doubles, Philipp Gruendler and Kohlloeffel check in at No. 10. Despite not playing together since the fall, Chris Surapol and Jeremy Drean are ranked No. 43. Team rankings will be released again on Mar. 1. Individual rankings are not due out again until Mar. 7.

Head Coach Billy Martin . . .
UCLA head coach Billy Martin owns a 289-56 (.838) overall record in his 13th season in Westwood. He led UCLA to its first NCAA title in more than 20 years this past May, as the Bruins pulled off a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Baylor in the 2005 NCAA final. As a player at UCLA in 1975, Martin captured the NCAA Singles Championship before going on to a very successful professional career. He is a member of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Hall of Fame.
