Los Angeles -- The UCLA women's tennis team took home two national honors on Sunday as assistant coach Rance Brown (Costa Mesa, CA) was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's National Coach of the Year and freshman Sara Walker (El Paso, TX) was named the ITA National Player to Watch.
For Brown, who is in his fifth year on the UCLA coaching staff, it is his first ITA National honor. This season, he helped guide the Bruins to an NCAA quarterfinal appearance and a 17-9 overall record. Last week, he was named the West Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
Walker, who is the No. 2-ranked player in the ITA singles rankings, finished her freshman season with a 35-10 overall record. She won the Pac-10 Conference singles title in late April and was named first-team All-Pac-10 as well as Pac-10 Freshman of the Year. The National Player to Watch award is given to a highly-ranked, non-senior player who has had an outstanding season, but has not yet won an ITA Collegiate Grand Slam event.
