Walnut Creek, Calif. - UCLA sophomore forward Maxwell Griffin (Palmdale, Calif.) has been named the Pac-10 Men's Soccer Player of the Week for Sept. 5-11, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Griffin, who was also named to the Soccer America Team of the Week, helped UCLA win the Crescent Financial Solutions Invitational at New Mexico after posting a 2-0 record with wins over the host Lobos (2-0) and Oakland (4-1).
In Friday's match, Griffin came off the bench to score both goals against 15th-ranked New Mexico. He broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 57th minute and then scored another a minute and a half later to record his first career multiple-goal game. The win was UCLA's first of the season and came against a team that made the finals of the NCAA Tournament a year ago.
In addition to his performance against New Mexico, Griffin started for UCLA against Oakland and helped the Bruins earn a 4-1 victory.
Leading the team with three goals and six points, Griffin is also tied for third in the Conference with a 1.20 points per game average.
UCLA is ranked 16th in the latest Soccer America rankings and has two big matches this week against ninth-ranked Santa Clara on Fri., Sept. 15 and eight-ranked San Francisco on Sun., Sept. 17.
This is Griffin's first weekly honor and the 26th all-time award for the Bruins.
