April 7, 2006

Box Score

Los Angeles - Freshman Brandon Crawford hit a grand slam and senior Brett McMillan hit a three-run home run to help UCLA earn a 9-5 win over visiting Washington State on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The win improves the Bruins to 17-13 overall and 2-2 in the Pac-10 while the Cougars fall to 21-11 overall and 3-4 in the Pac-10.

McMillan finished going 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBI, and senior Sean Smith went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Junior Hector Ambriz (5-4) tossed 6.2 innings allowing five runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts to earn the win.

UCLA went up 3-0 in the second inning on the long ball by McMillan. Ambriz led off the inning with a double down the left field line, followed by an infield single by Smith to move Ambriz to third base. With one out, McMillan drove a deep shot over the right center field wall for a three-run bomb.

The Bruins used another long ball to take an 8-0 lead in the fourth inning. Ambriz led off the inning with a walk, followed by a line drive single to center field by Smith, and a base hit to right center by junior Tim Stewart to load the bases with no outs. McMillan then came up to draw a walk to score Ambriz from third and give UCLA a 5-0 advantage. WSU starter Mike Wagner responded by striking out senior Josh Roenicke and freshman Ryan Babineau to give the Cougars two outs in the inning. The bases were still loaded for Crawford who connected on a drive over the center field wall for a grand slam home run, putting the Bruins up 8-0.

The bomb was Crawford's third of the season.

UCLA went up 9-0 on a sacrifice fly by Babineau to score McMillan from third after he singled and advanced to third base on a single by Roenicke.

Washington State got on the board for the first time in the seventh inning on a bloop RBI single by Ryan Krauser with the bases loaded and two outs. Scott Suttmeier's pinch hit two-run single down the left field line cut the UCLA lead to 9-3.

Junior Paul Oseguera came in to pitch in relief of Ambriz but Garrett Kimbrel singled to first base to score another run and reload the bases. Oseguera then walked Paul Gran to score Suttmeier from third and cut the UCLA lead to 9-5.

Roenicke came in from center field to relieve Oseguera to pitch the ninth to earn his second save of the season while collecting two strikeouts.

The Bruins and the Cougars will play game two of the three game series on Saturday, April 8 at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
