UCLA senior Lena Degteva has been named the Pacific-10 Conference Gymnast of the Week for March 1-7.
Degteva, from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada (Silverthorn HS/Gymnastics Mississauga), scored her first career 10.0 with a perfect score on vault and also set a new career-high in the all-around with a 39.7. Degteva successfully defended her Bruin Classic floor title with a meet record and career-high tying 9.95, tied for second on beam with a 9.875 and tied for fifth on bars with a 9.875.
Her 39.7 all-around score tied her for second place and stands as the fifth-highest all-around mark in school history.
This is Degteva's second career Gymnast of the Week award. She last earned the honor Mar. 3-8, 1999 after winning the all-around, bars and floor at the 1999 Bruin Classic. The Gymnast of the Week honor is the fourth for UCLA this season. Mohini Bhardwaj won the award Jan. 18, Onnie Willis was selected Feb. 8, and Heidi Moneymaker earned Gymnast of the Week honors Feb. 15.
In other gymnastics news, the Bruins remained second in the national rankings, released late last Tuesday. Michigan is ranked No. 1, followed by the Bruins, Georgia, Alabama and Nebraska. UCLA is also ranked second on vault, third on beam and floor and fourth on bars.
In the all-around rankings, Bhardwaj ranks fourth, Moneymaker ranks seventh, and Malia Jones is 24th. Bhardwaj and Moneymaker are ranked in all four events as well. Bhardwaj is the top-ranked gymnast in the nation on bars and ranks ranks eighth on vault, ninth on beam and 11th on floor. Moneymaker is second on bars, third on floor, fourth on vault and 14th on beam.
Others ranked in the Top 25 are Degteva on floor (9th), vault (12th) and bars (21st) and Willis on floor (11th) and vault (15th).
