This Week: The top-ranked UCLA women's water polo team (11-2 overall, 1-0 MPSF) has three matches, including two conference games, scheduled this week. On Friday, March 3, the Bruins head to Long Beach (6-7, 0-1) to battle the tenth-ranked 49ers in an MPSF conference matchup beginning at 4 pm. The following day, the Bruins travel to San Diego for two games. UCLA meets No. 11 San Diego State (3-7, 0-1) for a conference game beginning at noon and then heads to La Jolla to battle T-No. 12 UC San Diego (4-9) at 5 pm.
About the Opponents: UCLA owns a perfect 4-0 record against Long Beach State. The 49ers are currently 6-7 overall and 0-1 in the MPSF, having lost to USC earlier this month. At the UC Santa Barbara Tournament this past weekend, the 49ers finished 11th with a 3-1 record, defeating San Diego State 6-5 in the 11th-place match. Last year Long Beach State closed out the season with a 16-22 overall record and placed 11th nationally.
The San Diego State Aztecs are currently 3-7 on the season. The Aztecs went 2-2 and placed 12th at the UC Santa Barbara Tournament this past weekend, falling to Long Beach State in the 11th-place match. In the '99 season, the Aztecs finished with a 23-19 overall mark and placed fifth nationally. UCLA is 18-3 in the series against San Diego State.
UCLA has already defeated UC San Diego twice this season and currently owns a 12-3 series advantage over the Tritons. UC San Diego finished ninth at the UC Santa Barbara Tournament this past weekend with a 2-2 record. UCLA at the UCSB Tournament: UCLA finished third at the UC Santa Barbara Women's Open Tournament this past weekend, defeating crosstown rival USC 15-12 in the third place match Sunday. The Bruins were knocked out of the Championship match after Stanford handed them a 5-4 loss earlier that day. Earlier in the tournament, UCLA drowned La Verne 17-0 and then went on to grab an easy 13-3 win over UC Davis.
Bruin Notes: Sophomore Elaine Zivich (Lompoc, Calif. / Cabrillo HS) currently leads the team with 26 goals and has scored in all 13 of UCLA's games this season. Earlier this year, she was named MPSF Player of the Week, the first of the 2000 season, for the week of Feb. 8-13. The 5-11 attacker received the recognition after helping the Bruins capture the title at the 3rd Annual Rainbow Wahine Challenge. The Wahine Challenge MVP led all scorers at the tournament, racking up a total of eight goals in three games, including two hat tricks. Zivich also led UCLA in scoring at the UC Santa Barbara Tournament from Feb. 26-27, notching a total of 10 goals. The 5-11 attacker registered at least one goal in each of UCLA's four games, including a school-record tying and career-high six goals against No. 2 USC in the third place match. Last year, she was UCLA's leading scorer and was a first-team All-American and All-MPSF selection.
UCLA in the Polls: UCLA has been ranked No. 1 in the polls for two straight weeks. The Bruins moved up from No. 3 after they captured first place at the UC San Diego Invitational on February 13.
