Women's Rowing Sweeps Loyola Marymount And UC Irvine

March 12, 2005 -- The UCLA women's rowing team solidly defeated both UC Irvine and Loyola Marymount, capturing the Karen Hock-Hjelm Cup for the third consecutive year by winning the Varsity 8+ event in a time of 7:00. Loyola Marymount followed behind with a time of 7:20.6, and UC Irvine came in at 7:45.1.

The Bruins powered over the incoming tide and five knots headwind in the 2000 meter course at Marina Del Rey to record victories in the varsity 8+, second varsity 8+, the varsity 4+, the novice 8+ and the open 8+, sweeping the two schools.

The UCLA varsity eight consisted of Liz Pallas Jacobs (stroke), Kristin Bixel, Elizabeth Lee, Kelsey Hicks, Erin Haggerty, Jessica Fritz, Monica Grova, Jessica Rogers, Emina Ong (cox).

The winning times of the races were:

Women's Varsity 8+:

1. UCLA - 7:00.0

2. LMU - 7:20.6

3. UC Irvine - 7:45.1

Women's Second Varsity 8+:

1. UCLA - 7:16.3

2. LMU - 7:43.4

3. UCI - 8:07.6

Women's Varsity 4+:

1. UCLA - 8:01.4

2. LMU - 8:59.8

Women's' Open 8+:

1. UCLA - 7:59.4

2. LMU -8:28.9

Women's Novice 8+:

1. UCLA - 7:25.0

2. LMU - 7:34.8

3. UCI - 7:48.2

Up Next-- The Bruins will be host USC on the Sunday the 20th, as they compete for points in the Lexus Gauntlet Trophy challenge. Last year, USC captured the win in this dual meet, a feat the Bruins would not like to see occur again.
