Pepperdine, Calif. - Bruin men's tennis player Benjamin Kohlloeffel won a pair of matches Friday to reach the quarterfinals of the Wilson/ITA Fall Regionals at Pepperdine University.
Kohlloeffel, a 9-16 seed in the singles draw, opened the day with a 7-6(2), 6-1 win over USC's Kaes Van't Hof. He then defeated teammate Mathieu Dehaine, 6-4, 6-3 in the round of 16. Kohlloeffel will meet San Diego State's Dontia Haynes on Saturday for a spot in the semifinals.
The only other Bruin with a shot at reaching the quarterfinals in singles is fourth-seeded Alberto Francis, who was playing a late round of 16 match Friday. He defeated ASU's Nick Hegarty, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 earlier in the day.
In addition to Dehaine, two other Bruins lost round of 16 matches Friday, as second-seeded Chris Lam was upset by Pepperdine's Scott Doerner, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 and Jeremy Drean fell to USC"s Johan Berg, 7-6, 6-0.
In doubles play, top-seeded Francis and Kris Kwinta advanced to the quarterfinals by default. Kohlloeffel and Lam were playing a late match for spot in the quarterfinals as well.
Dehaine and Drean pulled out of their second-round doubles match due to injury.
