Phillips, from Norwalk and Mayfair HS, ended the ten-event competition with a season-best 6,763 points. After the first day, he was in 15th place with 3,366 points. He had season-best marks in the 100m (11.59, 2.1w, 734 points), long jump (21-5 1/4, 704 points), 110m hurdles (15.98, 2.2w, 735 points), discus (134-1, 682 points), pole vault (14-6 3/4, 743 points), javelin (168-3, 608 points), 1500m (4:48.30, 629 points).
Staton, from San Diego Patrick Henry HS, scored a personal-best 6,444 points. After the first day of competition, he was in 13th place (3,428 points). During the competition, Staton had season-best decathlon marks in the 100m (11.64, 2.9w, 723 points), high jump (6-7, 813 points), 400m (55.71, 571 points), 110m hurdles (16.23, 707 points), pole vault (13-1 1/2, 617 points), javelin (165-4, 598 points) and 1500m (5:03.17).
Men at Pomona Invitational
The Bruin men on Friday also sent several athletes to the Pomona Invitational. Freshman Martell Munguia won his 400m heat in a time of 49.27 and in the 1500m, junior Phil Young ran a 3:55.99 and freshman Daniel Clements' mark was 4:07.00.
This Weekend (April 20-21)
UCLA will also be competing at the Long Beach Invitational and Mt. SAC Relays. Because of the number of athletes and the lateness of the events, the next UCLA track and field update will be Monday, April 22.
