Los Angeles - The No. 5 UCLA women's tennis team managed only one singles victory Friday, falling to No. 2 Stanford, 6-1 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the loss, the Bruins fall to 15-4 overall and 5-2 in Pac-10 play. With the victory, the Cardinal improves to 21-1 overall and 7-0 in conference action. Stanford will take on USC tomorrow for the 2002 Pac-10 title.
Stanford took the one point awarded for doubles play, taking victories on all three courts. The featured match of the afternoon came at No. 1 doubles where the top two doubles teams in the country squared off. The higher ranked team ended up prevailing as Stanford's No. 1-ranked duo of Lauren Kalvaria/Gabriela Lastra defeated No. 2 Marinova/Walker of UCLA, 8-6.
In singles play, the Cardinal took five of six singles matches. UCLA's only victory on the day came at No. 6 singles where Catherine Hawley defeated Emilia Anderson, 6-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6).
The Bruins will round out the 2002 regular season tomorrow when they host No. 12 Cal at the Los Angeles Tennis Center beginning at Noon.
