No. 3 UCLA Takes Commanding Win over Pacific

April 14, 2006

Los Angeles, Calif. - The third-ranked UCLA women's water polo team defeated the unranked Pacific Tigers, 19-1 at the Sunset Recreation Center on a rainy Friday afternoon. UCLA moves its record to 22-3, 9-1 in the MPSF conference. Pacific falls to 0-19, 0-11 in MPSF play. The Bruins are now 15-0 overall against the Tigers.

The Bruins struck first in the game with a goal by Kristina Kunkel at 5:48. The team went on to put eight more goals on the scoreboard in the first quarter, taking a 9-0 lead after the first. Pacific struggled to get shots off and turned the ball over on most of its possessions.

In the second, the Tigers scored first, giving them hope for a comeback. Julia Snyder put the ball past UCLA goalie Brittany Fullen at the 6:13 mark. But at 4:18, Tanya Gandy began another Bruin run of goals. UCLA would add four more in the second quarter to make the halftime score 14-1.

The third quarter was very low scoring. Molly Cahill had the only goals of the quarter for either team, scoring two for the Bruins. UCLA held back its aggressive play in the second half as the rain began to pick up.

In the fourth, UCLA converted three more goals, eventually winning the game 19-1. In the match, 13 different Bruins scored. Brittany Fullen had four saves for UCLA on seven Pacific shots. Molly Cahill and Katie Rulon were the leading scorers and had three goals apiece. There were seven ejections on Pacific and three against UCLA. UCLA had 32 shots on goal compared to San Jose State's seven.

The last exciting Bruin home game of the season is on Saturday, April 15 at 1:00 PM against No. 2 Stanford. That game is Senior Day and all the Bruin seniors will be recognized for their contributions to the team.
