SO CAL TOURNAMENT: Second-ranked UCLA will travel across town to USC for the Southern California Tournament this weekend. The Bruins are in Pool D, which includes Mountain Pacific Sports Federation foe and fourth-ranked California, along with No. 13 Navy.
UCLA will take on the Golden Bears with a 4:10 pm match-up on Saturday, before a face-off with Navy at 8:50 pm later that night. The Bruins own a 61-47-1 record against California after splitting their meetings last season, including a 9-7 loss in the semi-finals of the MPSF Tournament. The Golden Bears will be opening their season earlier in the day with a 11:30 am match against Navy.
UCLA has dominated Navy over the years, never dropping a match. The Bruins will be looking for their 14th consecutive victory over the Midshipmen. Navy opened its season last weekend by hosting the Navy Open. They finished the weekend with a 3-1 record after victories over No. 12 Queen's College, No. 18 St. Francis and M.I.T and a loss to Long Beach State.
LAST WEEKEND: The Bruins opened their 2002 season with a 10-7 loss at seventh-ranked UC Irvine. Although UCLA built a 5-4 lead behind two Brett Ormsby goals heading into halftime, the Anteaters were persistent in the second half. UC Irvine fired off four third quarter goals to which the Bruins were unable to answer, being shut out in the period. UCLA scored two goals in the fourth quarter, including a second from senior defender Matt Flesher. However, the Anteaters scored two of their own to solidify the victory.
PRESEASON RANKINGS: The United States Water Polo National Collegiate Division I Preseason Poll was released last Wednesday. UCLA was ranked second, in the same position they ended last season, one spot behind defending national champion Stanford. MPSF opponents USC, California and Pepperdine rounded out the top five. Each opponent on the Bruins' 2002 schedule appeared in the preseason poll.
This week's new CWPA Poll will be released on Wednesday, September 11th.
