Shipp To Have Right Hip Surgery Friday

Sept. 22, 2005

UCLA sophomore Josh Shipp, one of UCLA's four returning starters from last season's NCAA Tournament team, on Friday will undergo outpatient arthroscopic right hip surgery at the UCLA Medical Center. UCLA hip specialist Dr. Sharon Hame will perform the procedure.

Shipp will have his labrum (cartilage) repaired. At some point during summer basketball, Shipp injured his right hip. When the symptoms of pain and discomfort did not go away after some time, an MRI arthrogram was performed on Tuesday and the labrum tear was discovered.

Recovery and rehabilitation time is approximately 8-12 weeks. The Bruins open practice on Friday, Oct. 14. UCLA's two exhibition games in Pauley Pavilion are Friday, Nov. 4 vs. Carleton University (Canada) and Thursday, Nov. 10 vs. CS Monterey Bay. The Bruins open the 2005-06 regular season in Pauley Pavilion on Tuesday, Nov. 15, hosting New Mexico State in a Preseason NIT first round contest. Shipp, a 6-5, 205-pound forward who was a prep All-American at Fairfax HS in Los Angeles, in 2005 was an Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 selection. He appeared in all 29 games and started 23 of the final 24 contests. Shipp averaged 27.9 minutes, 9.3 points (No. 4 on the team), 5.2 rebounds (No. 2/No. 10 on the all-time Bruin freshman chart), 1.83 assists (No. 4) and 1.21 steals (No. 3). His rebound average was the highest of any freshman in the Pac-10. Shipp last season had two double-doubles (15 points/12 rebounds vs. Pepperdine on Dec. 11; 13 points/11 rebounds vs. Oregon State on March 10); scored in double figures in 12 of the last 25 games; led UCLA in rebounding six times, in scoring twice and in steals on 11 occasions. His season-highs were 20 points, twice (vs. Washington on Feb. 5 and Oregon on March 5); 12 rebounds vs. Pepperdine; five assists vs. Texas Tech on March 17 and four steals vs. California on Feb. 17.

"Obviously this is a setback for Josh and our team," Bruin head coach Ben Howland said. "We hope to have Josh back by late November or early December, but as with any injury that requires surgery, you take it one day at a time. We have the best medical team and we will be very conservative and cautious as our No. 1 concern is for Josh's well-being and long-term health."
