Bruins Set to Begin Three-Game Homestand

Busy Week for the Bruins: Three-time defending national champion UCLA (6-5 overall, 1-1 MPSF) will host three games this week, including two MPSF conference matches. The Bruins will host their first home match of the 1999 season on Friday, March 5 at 3 pm versus the University of Hawai'i (10-5 overall, 1-1 MPSF). The next day, the Bruins meet USC (10-1 overall, 1-1 MPSF) for a conference match at noon, and on Sunday, March 7, the Bruins meet Hawai'i again to play in a conference match at 12 noon.

The eighth-ranked Rainbow Wahine are in their second season as MPSF participants. To date, the Bruins own a 5-0 advantage over Hawai'i, including this season's 7-4 victory on Feb. 13 at the UC San Diego Tournament. The top-ranked Trojans were defeated by Cal on Feb. 26 but finished first at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational this weekend. USC has defeated UCLA in their two meetings this season. They are led in scoring by Aniko Pelle, who has netted 14 goals.

Bruin Notes: The Bruins finished fourth at the UC Santa Barbara Tournament this weekend, with wins over Loyola Marymount (13-1) and San Diego State (11-4) on the first day of competition. The following day, UCLA lost a close 7-6 match to top-ranked USC and then lost the third place game to California, 8-5. Over the weekend, freshman Elaine Zivich (Lompoc, CA) led the Bruins with nine goals, scoring in all four games. She was followed by sophomore Kristin Guerin who netted four goals against San Diego State and a total of seven over the weekend. Freshman Jenny Lamb also scored in all four games, netting a total of five goals. In all, nine Bruins scored, with all but one scoring in more than one game.

Elaine Zivich Earns MPSF Player of the Week Honors: For her outstanding performance in the Santa Barbara Tournament this weekend, Zivich was awarded Player of the Week honors. A consistent scoring threat, she scored two goals each against Loyola Marymount, USC and California and netted three against San Diego State. The 5-11 attacker currently leads the Bruins in scoring with 21 goals.

Upcoming matches: The Bruins host the University of Massachusetts (3-0 overall) on March 16 at 3 pm. On March 20 and 21, the Bruins head to Northern California where they will play Cal and the University of the Pacific at 12 noon and 11 am respectively.

Celebrating Women's Athletics: The UCLA Athletic Department will celebrate the Silver Anniversary of UCLA Women's Intercollegiate Athletics on May 1, 1999. "A Celebration of Champions" dinner will honor the accomplishments of the UCLA Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Program and its athletes over the past 25 years.

Bruins Host MPSF Tournament: The UCLA Women's Water Polo Team will host the MPSF Tournament this year. The event will be held at the Sunset Recreation Center, from April 9-11.
