No. 9 Cavaliers Upset No. 2 Bruins, 4-2 at Team Indoors

Feb. 18, 2005

CHICAGO - The No. 2-ranked UCLA men's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season Friday, dropping a 4-2 decision to No. 9 Virginia in the Quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships at Chicago's Mid-Town Tennis Club. The Bruins, who fall to 9-1 on the season, will take on No. 3 Florida in a consolation match on Saturday.

The Bruins started the day by claiming the doubles point with victories at the top two courts. UCLA's Benjamin Kohlloeffel and Luben Pampoulov upset No. 19 Nick Meythaler and Rylan Rizza, 8-3 at the No. 1 position. Following an 8-5 win by Virginia at the No. 3 spot, the Bruins clinched the point at court No. 2, where sixth-ranked Alberto Francis and Kris Kwinta defeated Somdev Devvarman and Treat Huey, 8-5.

The trouble for UCLA began prior to singles play when it was learned that Pampoulov, the Bruins No. 1 player, would not play due to a neck injury suffered before the team traveled to Chicago. With Pampoulov out, everyone was forced to move up a spot in the lineup.

The Cavaliers quickly capitalized, as Darrin Cohen defeated freshman Mathieu Dehaine, 6-3, 6-3 at court No. 6. UCLA answered back to take a 2-1 lead in the match when Kwinta posted a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Huey at court No. 5. That was the last point the Bruins would get however, as Virginia came back to take the next three matches in straight sets.

Next off was court No. 2, where Rizza, ranked No. 36, defeated 62nd-ranked Chris Lam, 6-2, 6-3. Right next door on court No. 3, 22nd-ranked Somdev Devvarman was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over No. 39 Francis. The match was clinched at the No. 4 position, where 63rd-ranked Marko Miklo defeated Philipp Gruendler, 6-2, 6-4. Friday marked Gruendler's first singles appearance in a dual match this season.

The No. 1 position was the only court that was suspended Friday, as Kohlloeffel, ranked eighth nationally and No. 19 Doug Stewart were tied at 1-1 in the third set when the Cavaliers clinched the match. Stewart won the first set 7-5 and Kohlloeffel took the second 6-3.
