LOS ANGELES, Calif. - UCLA water polo freshmen Chay Lapin and Miguel Cidoncha-Simms have been named to the U.S. Junior National team roster and will compete for the United States in the Junior World Championships next month, USA Water Polo announced Thursday. Lapin and Cidoncha-Simms, who are expected to redshirt for UCLA this season, will be among 13 players led by Head Coach Doug Peabody at the World Championships near Buenos Aires, Argentina from October 6-15, 2005.
Cidoncha-Simms is an attacker from University City High School in San Diego, California, and Lapin is a goalkeeper from Wilson High School in Long Beach, California. Lapin was a member of the U.S. National Senior Team's training roster this summer along with Bruin teammate Michael March.
"Chay and Miguel will get a tremendous amount of playing time on the trip," according to Peabody.
The roster for the Junior World Championships was chosen from a training squad of 24 men selected to take part in a training camp at the Water Polo National Training Center in Los Alamitos, California, on Memorial Day weekend.
In addition to the United States, the 2005 Junior World Championship will be sought after by teams from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Columbia, Croatia, Egypt, France, Greece, Hungary, Iran, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Russia, Slovakia, South Africa, South Arabia, Spain, Serbia and Montenegro and Venezuela. The event's opening ceremony will take place at the Pan American Stadium on Saturday, October 8.
