Los Angeles - The No. 8 UCLA women's tennis team defeated its fourth ITA Top-25 team of the dual-match season when it knocked off No. 17 Texas 6-1 on Tuesday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
UCLA started strong, sweeping the doubles matches, knocking off country's 19th-ranked team in the process. Jackie Carleton and Feriel Esseghir accomplished the feat when they defeated Texas' Ziva Grasic and Kendra Strohm 8-3 at the No. 1 position. At the number two doubles position, UCLA's Sarah Gregg and Susi Wild beat Lindsay Blau and Michelle Krinke 8-1, while Laura Gordon and Sara Walker beat Kelly Baritot and Macey Breese by the same score on court No. 3.
The Bruins kept the momentum going into singles play, as Carleton knocked off No. 105 Strohm, Texas' only ranked singles player that played on Tuesday, 6-2, 6-3. Wild beat Krinke 6-3, 6-2, and Gregg won the first set over Blau 7-6(4) before Blau retired down 4-0 in the second set.
UCLA also secured victories at the fourth and sixth singles positions. Gordon beat Grasic 6-3, 6-1 while Shilpa Joshi beat Breece 7-6(4), 6-4.
Texas' only point came when Baritot beat UCLA's Anya Loncaric 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.
The Bruins are off for two and a half weeks during final examinations and spring break, but will resume the dual-match season on March 28 at noon when they play host to Arizona at the LATC.
