LOS ANGELES - The top-ranked Stanford women's tennis team swept singles play Saturday, posting a 6-0 victory over No. 17 UCLA in a non-conference showdown at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the victory, the Cardinal improve to 8-0 on the season, while the Bruins fall to 4-2.
With a chance of rain in the Los Angeles area, both teams agreed to start the match with singles first, with doubles to be played later if needed. Stanford, however, clinched the match before it could get to that point.
Cardinal senior Amber Liu clinched the match for Stanford at court No. 1, positing a 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 win over UCLA sophomore Riza Zalameda. That victory gave the Cardinal the four points it needed to secure the victory.
UCLA returns to action tomorrow, resuming Friday's suspended match with No. 6 Cal. UCLA had a 1-0 lead and was winning on four of six courts when play was halted due to rain. Sunday's match will begin at 11:00 a.m.
