LOS ANGELES - The UCLA women's golf signed a pair of top local prospects during the Fall letter-of-intent signing period, the athletic department announced this week.

In the Fall of 2000, first-year Head Coach Carrie Leary will welcome Krystal Shearer of Alemany High School and Gina Umeck of East Valley High in Redlands.

"They're both players who will make an impact on our program," said Head Coach Carrie Leary. "They will give us a good foundation for the future."

Shearer, who has won more than 25 local junior events in her career, tied for medlaist honors at the 1998 CIF championships.

Umeck, who chose UCLA over Wake Forest, North Carolina and Florida, won the 1997 CIF championships as a sophomore. In August she recorded a fourth place finish at the AJGA Rome Junior Classic at Stonebridge.

Both players will compete in the 1999 CIF Championships in Temecula this week.
