No. 12 Bruins Welcome UCSB, Rice to the LATC This Week . . .
The No. 12-ranked UCLA women's tennis team (1-0) hosts a pair of matches this week, as the Bruins take on both UC Santa Barbara and Rice this Tuesday and Thursday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins take a 28-0 series advantage into Tuesday's match against UCSB. Thursday marks the first-ever meeting between UCLA and Rice. Former Bruin Elizabeth Schmidt (1997-2000) is an assistant coach with the Owls. Both matches this week begin at 1:30 p.m. Live stats for all UCLA home matches can be accessed at UCLA's official athletic website - www.uclabruins.com
Bruins Blank Lions in Season Opener . . .
For the second year in a row, UCLA kicked off its dual-match season with a victory over local rival Loyola Marymount, as the Bruins posted a 7-0 decision over the Lions in their 2006 season opener last Thursday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. UCLA swept three doubles matches before winning all six singles matches in straight sets. Freshmen Anna-Viktoria Lind and Ashley Joelson picked up the first dual-match victories of their careers Thursday.
In the ITA Rankings . . .
UCLA checks in at No. 12 in the latest ITA Rankings released on Jan. 10. Stanford is the No. 1 team, followed by Florida, Texas, Georgia Tech and USC. Individually, Alex McGoodwin is ranked No. 77 in singles. She is followed by No. 96 Laura Gordon and No. 99 Ashley Joelson. The Bruins currently do not have any doubles teams ranked.
Looking Ahead . . .
Following this week's matches, UCLA will not be in action again until it hosts UC Irvine on Feb. 9. The two week break is a result of the Bruins electing not to participate in this year's USTA/ITA National Team Indoors in Madison, Wisc. Since Riza Zalameda and Anna-Viktoria Lind did not join the team until recently, UCLA will take the time off from competing to get in more practices with a complete roster. The Bruins kickoff Pac-10 play in mid-February, hosting Cal (Feb. 17) and Stanford (Feb. 18).
