LOS ANGELES - UCLA juniors Annica Cooper (Chicago, Ill.) and Kelly O'Connor (Anaheim, Calif.) were named to the 12 member 1999 GTE Spring Women's At-Large Academic Team for District VIII as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Cooper is a Business Economics major with a 3.72 grade point average, while O'Connor carries a 3.93 gpa as a Linguistics/Computer Science major.

The Bruins' No. 1 women's tennis player most of the season, Cooper has helped lead UCLA to a No. 7 ranking in the nation and a dual match team record of 18-7. A two-time All-American, who also received First Team All-Conference honors and was chosen the Player of the Year last season and honorable mention as a rookie, Cooper is currently listed No. 16 nationally in singles. Cooper qualified for the NCAA Individual Championships in both singles and doubles, being eliminated in the second round of singles play today while remaining alive in doubles play.

Cooper finished the season with a team leading 27-13 overall record and went 17-6 in dual matches. Cooper started the year in the No. 2 slot where she posted a 7-1 record before being called on to step into the No. 1 slot for the second season in a row. She posted a 10-5 mark in the top slot, playing there in every match since March 6. Also competing at No. 1 doubles for the Bruins, Cooper teams junior Amanda Basica (Lomita, Calif.) to form the No. 6 ranked doubles team in the nation. As a team Basica and Cooper are currently competing in the NCAA Doubles Championship with a 25-8 overall record and a 12-6 record in dual matches, all in the top slot.

O'Connor is a jumper on the UCLA women's track & field team. Her gpa is the highest of any UCLA student-athlete over the last two years (3.95). She has been on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll every quarter during her UCLA career. Her UCLA best of 39-6 1/2 in the triple jump is No. 10 in school history. She leaped a season-best 39-5 1/4 in 1999 and scored for the Bruins last year at the Pac-10 Championships, placing seventh.

In order to be eligible for Academic All-American honors, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), must be a starter or an important reserve and be in at least their second season at their current school. District VIII includes schools in the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and British Columbia.

The District VIII winners advance to the GTE All-American national ballot. The national GTE Academic All-American Team will be announced on June 17, 1999.
