Jorge Salcedo Hired As UCLA Men's Soccer Assistant Coach

Feb. 1, 2001

UCLA men's soccer head coach Todd Salda?a announced the hiring of former UCLA All-American and Los Angeles Galaxy star Jorge Salcedo as an assistant coach.

Salcedo, who is also an assistant coach with the U-17 SoCal ODP State team, recently retired from Major League Soccer after a five-year career. In his first season in the league, he was a starter for the Los Angeles Galaxy and helped take his team to the MLS Championship game. Salcedo also played for Columbus, Chicago and Tampa Bay before returning to the Galaxy in 1999. Injuries cut short his 2000 season, and he saw action in just five games with the Galaxy before retiring.

The Cerritos native had an illustrious career at UCLA from 1990-1993. Salcedo started all four years as a midfielder/defender, playing 74 games and tallying six goals and seven assists for 19 points. As a freshman, he scored the decisive penalty kick in the shootout during the 1990 NCAA Championship game to give UCLA its second national title. In 1993, he earned NSCAA first-team All-America honors.

Salcedo was a two-time Parade All-American at Cerritos HS and a member of U.S. Youth national teams. In 1989, he captained the U.S. U-17 National Team to a historic win over Brazil at the Youth World Cup, and in 1990, he captained the U-20 National Team at the CONCACAF Tournament. He earned three caps with the full national team in 1994 and 1995.

Prior to his MLS career, Salcedo played with the L.A. Salsa in the APSL and then for F.C. Morelia of the Mexican First Division.

With this new coaching position, Salcedo follows in the footsteps of his father, Hugo, who was an assistant coach at UCLA from 1978-1979. Hugo, a 1972 U.S. Olympian, has been a member of FIFA since 1984.

"I'm very pleased to have Jorge join our staff," said Salda?a. "As a former UCLA player, he has a great understanding of our university, and he knows what it takes to be successful at the collegiate, national team and professional levels."
