Vandenberg Leads Bruins at USA Nationals

In the final days of competition at the USA Swimming Nationals in Palo Alto, four Bruin women advanced to the finals, ending a solid event for the UCLA team. Kim Vandenberg led the way for the Bruins, advancing to three final races.

Vandenberg, fresh off her first national title, advanced to the finals in the 50m freestyle after swimming 26.56 in the preliminary races. She finished in 16th place, swimming 26.77. Vandenberg had an impressive competition throughout Nationals, winning the 200m butterfly with a time of 2:13.23, and finishing 13th in the 200m freestyle with a time of 2:04.36.

Jane Imagane advanced to the finals in the 400m freestyle after finishing ninth in the preliminaries with a time of 4:18.48. She improved on her time in the finals, but dropped to 13th, swimming 4:18.42. Earlier in the week, Imagane had finished 18th in the 800m freestyle with a time of 8:55.70.

Isabel Meissner, competing in the 200m individual medley, advanced to the finals with a preliminary finish of 12th in a time of 2:20.91. In the finals, she moved up a spot to 11th with an improved time of 2:20.89. Also competing in the 200m IM were Kim Scarborough (34th, 2:23.70) and Lindsey Smart (47th, 2:27.05).

UCLA fielded three different relay teams during the competition. In the 400m freestyle relay, comprised of Lindsey Smart, Kim Vandenberg, Kendall Butler, and Amy Thurman, the Bruin women finished 13th with a time of 3:54.47. In the 800m freestyle relay, Kendall Butler, Kim Scarborough, Kim Vandenberg, and Lindsey Smart finished 18th overall with a time of 8:34.90. In the final relay for the Bruins, the 400m medley relay, Lindsey Smart, Eileen Seissen, Kim Vandenberg, and Amy Thurman finished 20th with a time of 4:26.09.

On Wednesday, in the 200m breaststroke, Shellene Catalano finished 37th with a time of 2:42.18, while Jeana Fuccillo finished 44th with a time of 2:48.83. In the 200m backstroke, Kim Scarborough finished 26th (2:22.75) and Courtney Iversen was 34th (2:24.42). In the 200m butterfly, Krista Daley advanced to the finals, finishing 16th with a time of 2:20.90. She swam 2:17.85 in the preliminary races to finish 15th.

In Thursday's action, Kim Scarborough and Courtney Iversen competed in the 400m individual medley. Scarborough was 30th (5:03.44), while Iversen was 32nd (5:04.33).

In Friday's action, Amy Thurman and Kendall Butler competed in the 100m butterfly. Thurman finished 43rd with a time of 1:03.90, while Butler swam 1:04.63 to finishing 52nd overall.

On the final day of competition, in the 200m individual medley, Kim Scarborough finished 34th (2:23.70), and Lindsey Smart finished 47th with a tie of 2:27.05. Amy Thurman competed in the 50m freestyle, finishing 28th with a time of 27.00.
