On the final day (Friday, Sept. 7) of track and field competition at the Goodwill Games at ANZ Stadium in Brisbane, Australia, Bruin alum John Godina won the silver medal in the men's shot put.
Godina, who already this year has won the World Indoor and World/USA Outdoor titles, placed second in the men's shot put with a throw of 68-1 1/2. The winner of the competition was Godina's USA teammate, Adam Nelson (68-7 1/4). Godina won $12,000 for his second-place effort. It was Godina's second event of the Games. He also placed eighth (200-3) in the men's discus on Wednesday (Sept. 5).
In all, five UCLA athletes, all Bruin alums, won three medals at the 2001 Goodwill Games, including Gail Devers' gold medal in the 100m hurdles. Along with Godina's silver medal, Amy Acuff won a bronze medal in the women's high jump.
