Bruins Fall to Cal State Northridge, 6-2

March 8, 2005

Box Score

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - UCLA scored twice in the top of the eighth inning but it was not enough to overcome a five-run deficit as Cal State Northridge claimed a 6-2 victory in Tuesday afternoon's makeup contest at Matador Field. The game, which was a makeup of a February 11 rainout between the two schools, concludes the scheduled three-game series.

The Bruins, who have now lost six in a row, fall to 7-10 on the season as the Matadors improve to 6-5-1. UCLA stranded eight runners compared to CSUN's 12 but the Matadors turned 2 double plays and were only retired in order once by UCLA.

Cal State Northridge struck first by putting single runs on the board in the second and third innings off of Bruin starter Brant Rustich (1-2). In both frames, CSUN designated hitter Luke Riordan knocked in second baseman Jeff Tezak with an RBI double in the second and an RBI single in the third.

The two early runs chased Rustich, as he was replaced by southpaw Brian Schroeder in the fourth. Rustich allowed two runs on three hits over three innings of work. He struck out five and walked four.

Northridge jumped right on Schroeder for two more runs in the fourth inning courtesy of two hit batsmen, an RBI single from Michael Paulk and an RBI groundout by John Voita. The hit was Paulk's second of the game - his first hit in the first inning extended his hitting streak to 26 games, a Cal State Northridge school record.

UCLA threatened in the fifth as the Bruins loaded the bases with two outs after a Nolan Rouse double and back-to-back walks to Will Penniall and Brett McMillan. But CSUN starter Kyle Jean induced Sean Smith into an inning-ending groundout to escape the threat.

UCLA finally got on the board in the eighth when Hector Ambriz singled in Sean Smith from second base. Smith would later come around to score on an error by CSUN shortstop Raymond Ravago.

Matador right fielder John Voita added his third home run of the year in the bottom of the eighth to give CSUN the final four-run advantage.

Jean (1-0) picked up the victory after shutting out the Bruins through five innings while allowing just three hits and striking out two strikeouts. Reliever Matt Gaylord tossed the final four innings, allowing just four hits, for his first save of the season.

UCLA used a total of five pitchers in the losing effort. Junior Garett White was most effective, allowing just the home run to Voita over three innings of work. He also struck out a career high four batters.
