SANTA BARBARA, CA - The No. 2 UCLA Women's Water Polo Team defeated No. 11 UC Santa Barbara 5-2 to improve to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the MPSF. The Bruins held the Gauchos scoreless through three periods and were led in scoring by sophomore Kristina Kunkel who found the back of the net two times.
The first and second periods were defensive affairs as the Bruins were held to only one goal in each period. However, it would be enough as UCLA held the Gauchos scoreless to take the 2-0 lead after one half of play. In the third period UCLA's offense would come alive, as the Bruins would score three times and again hold the Gauchos scoreless to take a 5-0 lead going into the final period. Though the Gauchos would score twice in the fourth period to cut the deficit to 5-2 it would not be enough and UCLA was able to come away with the 5-2 victory.
The Bruins will make a return to Santa Barbara next weekend to participate in the Gaucho Invitational Tournament. UCLA is seeded second and will open tournament play on Saturday, February 28th at 9:00 AM against Pacific.
