Los Angeles, Calif. - The UCLA women's basketball squad handed out its 2001-02 team awards Friday night at the annual year-end banquet. Junior point guard Natalie Nakase was honored with the Bruin Award for overall excellence.
Nakase, a team co-captain, earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors after averaging 7.9 points (9.2 ppg in conference play) and 5.1 assists while starting all 29 games. She ranked third in the conference in assists, fourth in assist/turnover ratio (1.45), ninth in free throw percentage (.783) and 10th in steals (1.72).
Sophomore forward Whitney Jones was named the Offensive Player of the Year. The two-sport star averaged 9.5 points per game and ranked 10th in the conference in three-point field goals (1.42 average).
Senior forward Shalada Allen was selected the team's Most Improved Player. Allen averaged 8.1 points and 5.7 rebounds and led the Bruins with a 41.4% shooting percentage this season, improving upon her numbers from 2000-01, when she averaged 2.8 points and 2.2 rebounds. Allen ranked among the Top 15 in the Pac-10 in rebounding.
Senior center Malika Leatham earned the Scholar-Athlete Award. Leatham, who is on track to graduate in the spring, ranked 11th in the Pac-10 in rebounding with a 5.9 average and also averaged 6.2 points per game.
