Sophomore Marcin Matkowski (Szczecin, Poland/Secondary School No. 5) of the UCLA Men's Tennis Team was selected as the UCLABruins.com Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Oct. 22-28.
Matkowski defeated No. 4 seeded Stefan Suter of Pepperdine, 6-4, 6-4 on Sunday afternoon to claim the singles title in the Omni Hotels ITA RegionVIII - South Championships at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu. Later that afternoon, Matkowski and teammate Jean-Julien Rojer, the top-seeded doubles team in the tournament, defeated the No. 2 seeded Sebastien Graeff and Suter of Pepperdine in the doubles final.
Matkowski defeated four seeded players en route to the championship, defeating No. 8 Steven Capriati of Arizona in the third round, top seed Al Garland of Pepperdine in the quarterfinals, teammate and No. 6 seed Tobias Clemens in the semifinals and Suter in the finals.
As a result of the victory, Matkowski earned singles and doubles automatic berths to the Omni Hotels ITA National Indoor Championships scheduled for November 8-11 at the Brookhaven Tennis Club outside of Dallas.
This is Matkowski's first career UCLABruins.com Student-Athlete of the Week honor.
