Four female UCLA golfers completed the first round of play in the 104th U.S. Women's Amateur, hosted by the Kahkwa Club in Erie, PA. The tournament features 36 holes of stroke play with the top 64 players advancing to match play beginning Wednesday.
Incoming freshman Amie Cochran was one of just six players in the field of 156 to break par in Monday's first round. Cochran, from Torrance, fired a two-under par score of 70 and was in third place, two shots behind the leader. Beginning on the 10th hole, she was four-under par through the first nine before losing two strokes to par on the inward nine.
Fifth-year senior Gina Umeck fired a one-under par score of 71 in the first round and was tied for fourth place. Umeck was even par through her first nine holes and one-under on her final nine.
Senior Charlotte Mayorkas and 2004 UCLA graduate Bridget Dwyer each posted 78s, six-over par. Mayorkas traveled from Ohio Sunday night after tying for 56th in the LPGA's Jamie Farr Classic over the weekend.
Spain's Tania Elosegui posted a four-under par 68 and leads the field entering Tuesday's second round.
