Berkeley, Calif. - Junior RHP Hector Ambriz earned his first complete-game win of the season to lead No. 22 UCLA to a 4-2 victory over California on Friday afternoon at Evans Field. The win improves the Bruins to 24-17 overall and 8-5 in the Pac-10 while Cal drops to 19-22 overall and 6-10 in the Pac-10.

Ambriz (6-5) went the distance for the Bruins, giving up two runs on four hits with five strikeouts and one walk. The Golden Bears' only runs of the game came on a two-run home run in the third inning, as Ambriz retired 18 of the final 20 batters he faced in the game.

Freshman Jermaine Curtis led the way going 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored, and seniors Chris Jensen and Brett McMillan, and freshman Tim Murphy each had two hits and a RBI apiece.

UCLA put up a run in the top of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead over Cal. Curtis laid down a bunt single to third base and advanced to second base on a throwing error by the Cal catcher Garrett Bussiere on the play. Jensen followed with a single up the middle to score Curtis from second for the first run of the game.

Cal took a 2-1 lead in the third inning on a two-run home run to left field by Rob Nesbitt with one out.

The Bruins tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fifth inning. Senior Sean Smith led off the inning with a double to center field and advanced to third on a ground out to second base by freshman Ryan Babineau. With two outs, freshman Brandon Crawford laid down a bunt single down the first base line to push Smith across from third.

Junior Hector Ambriz did not strike about Golden Bear until the fifth inning when he struck out the side.

UCLA scored one in the sixth inning for a 3-2 lead. Jensen led off the inning with a single to right field and scored from second on a base hit up the middle by Murphy with two outs.

The Bruins would go up 4-2 in the top of the eighth inning. Curtis started the inning with an infield single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jensen, and a groundout to second by Ambirz. With two outs, McMillan singled to right field to pick Curtis up at third and give UCLA a two-run cushion that would last.

UCLA and Cal will play game two of the three-game series on Saturday, April 29 at 1 p.m.
