PORTLAND, OR - No. 14 UCLA defeated The University of Portland women's volleyball team, 3-0 (30-17, 30-24, 30-24) tonight at the Nike Portland Invitational at the Chiles Center in Portland, OR. With the win, the Bruins improve to 4-3 on the season.
The Pilots started the match tense and a bit tentative, dropping the first game 30-17. The Bruin's block was huge and Portland had trouble hitting through it. When the Pilots relaxed and played their game, the scores were a lot closer in the last two games (30-24, 30-24).
"UCLA is a very good team," said Head Coach Doug Sparks. "Their block was huge tonight and that made the difference in the match."
UCLA's Cira Wright racked up 12 kills and hit for .417 in the match. Lauren Fendrick notched 12 kills and a .400 hitting percentage, along with eight digs. Krystal McFarland posted 39 assists and seven digs, while sophomore libero Chrissie Zartman added 10 digs. The Bruins hit for .248 and added 5.0 total team blocks in the match, along with 59.0 points.
