CORVALLIS, OR - The 11th-ranked UCLA women's volleyball team lost a four-game match in Corvallis on Monday evening, falling to Oregon State 25-30, 30-14, 30-22, 30-27. Ashley Bowles led the 17-8 (11-6 Pac-10) Bruins with 17 kills on the evening and was joined in double figures by Ashley Bowles, who had 15 kills.
OSU led by as many as seven (12-5) in game one, but the Bruins rallied to tie things up at 13-13. The game was tied two other times before a kill by Lauren Fendrick gave UCLA a 17-16 lead, which the Bruins never relinquished.
After hitting .245 in the opening game, the Bruin offense faltered in game two. OSU held UCLA to a -.171 mark with 16 errors and just nine kills.
The Bruins scored the first point of game three off an OSU ball-handling error, but that would be their only lead of the game as OSU scored five consecutive points - two off Daedelow kills and three off UCLA hitting errors - to take control of the game. The Bruins got within a point on four occasions later in the game but could never regain the lead.
Game four was a seesaw battle with several ties and lead changes. After being tied 22-22, the Bruins went up by two and the Beavers called timeout. OSU got the sideout and had the game tied up four other times, the last at 27-27, before scoring three points off a kill from Schmidt and a block and a kill from Katrina Nelson to close out the game and give the Beavers the win.
UCLA was led by Bowles with 17 kills and Fendrick with 15 kills. Freshman Chrissie Zartman checked in with a team-high 15 digs, and freshman middle blocker had UCLA's best hitting night, posting a .571 attack percentage with eight kills.
The Bruins complete their regular season schedule on Tuesday night with a 7 pm match in Eugene, OR against the Ducks.
