LOS ANGELES - The eighth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team completed its sweep of the Arizona schools on Saturday, defeating Arizona State, 6-1 in a non-conference match at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins, who defeated Arizona by the same score a day earlier, improve to 9-3 overall. With the loss, the Sun Devils fall to 5-3.
After dropping the doubles point to Arizona on Friday, UCLA came back strong in doubles on Saturday, winning all three matches to claim the one point advantage heading into singles play.
The Bruins took a 3-0 lead in the match after posting two quick singles wins. Third-ranked Benjamin Kohlloeffel was first to finish, taking care of ASU's Jonathan Kinsella, 6-2, 6-3 at court No. 1. Next off was court No. 4, where UCLA's Philipp Gruendler was a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Wes Miller.
Following an ASU victory at court No. 6, UCLA eventually clinched the match at court No. 2, where freshman Haythem Abid downed Chris Biro, 7-5, 6-3. Other singles winners on the day for UCLA were Mathieu Dehaine (court No. 3) and Michael Look (court No. 4).
UCLA will return to action on Tuesday when it hosts USC at the Los Angeles Tennis Center beginning at 1:30 p.m.
