Bruins Win 12 Inning Showdown in Fullerton, 5-4

April 21, 2004

Box Score

FULLERTON, CA - Josh Roenicke hit a single in the top of the 12th inning to bring in Ryan McCarthy and claim a 5-4 win for the Bruins (21-16) over Cal State Fullerton (23-17) on Tuesday night.

The teams had been tied up at 4-4 since the Titans had evened the score back in the bottom of the seventh inning. Bruin relievers held Cal State Fullerton to only one hit over the final five frames. Kevin Brophy improved to 5-0 on the season as he held the Titans scoreless in the last 2.2 innings of action.

After Kurt Suzuki homered in the bottom of the first inning, UCLA rallied to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the second frame. Brandon Averill was hit by a pitch to start the inning before Preston Griffin doubled. However a bad throw from the outfield would allow Averill to score and Griffin to move to third. Griffin would then score on an error by the shortstop.

The Titans would then even the score in the bottom of the second before the Bruins scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning to reclaim a 4-3 advantage. Aaron Markel would hit a double to lead-off the frame before Jarrad Page hit an infield single to give UCLA runners at first and third. Mike Svetlic drove Markel in with a single through the right side. Brett McMillan would then bring Page home with his second single of the night.

McCarthy, McMillan and Griffin each finished the night with two hits, as Griffin doubled twice.

Starter David Johnson was solid again in a career-high 6.1 innings of work. Johnson allowed four runs on six hits, while striking out four Titans.

UCLA will return to Pacific-10 play this weekend when it travels to California for a three-game series. Friday's game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
