This Week - Bruins Travel To National Team Indoors
An early indicator of how the best teams in the nation match up against each other comes at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships to be hosted by the University of Wisconsin in Madison Feb. 18-21. This is the 12th consecutive year that Wisconsin will host the event which includes an elite field of teams including 15 of the top 17 teams in the nation. UCLA will face the University of Georgia in the first round.
New Rankings Due Out Tuesday, Feb. 16
The First ITA National rankings of 1999 will be released on Tuesday, Feb. 16. UCLA currently has two individuals ranked in singles, but other Bruin players did not compete enough during the fall to retain a ranking and are expected to reappear.
About This Week's First Opponent - No. 3 Georgia
Ranked No. 3 entering the week, the University of Georgia is UCLA's first round opponent at the National Team Indoor Championships in Madison, Wisconsin. The Lady Bulldogs enter the week with a perfect 5-0 record having dropped just two matches in their five outings. Five singles players and three doubles pairs are listed in the fall edition of the national rankings. Headlining the Lady Bulldog lineup is no easy task, but senior Vanessa Castellano is doing so with a 5-0 dual record and a 15-5 overall mark as the No. 8 ranked player in the nation. Also seeing time in the top-slot is junior Marissa Catlin who is ranked No. 46 with a 2-1 dual and 16-5 overall record. These two are also the No. 1 ranked doubles team in the nation owning a 14-1 overall record and two ITA Grand Slam titles already this season. A pair of Australians are also ranked high for the Lady Bulldogs as sophomore Aarthi Venkatesan and junior Ester Knox (a transfer from Cal) are listed No. 26 and 37 respectively and are both 5-0 in duals. UCLA owns a slight 3-2 advantage in the all-time series with Georgia.
Last Week - Bruins Suffer First Loss
UCLA suffered its first loss of the season at cross-town rival USC on Saturday. The Bruins posted straight-set wins in the top-two positions, but had four players suffer their first dual match losses of the season in the No. 3-6 slots. The match was decided with the outcome of a hard-fought No. 1 doubles match which also marked the first dual loss, and the teams split the final two doubles positions.
Player Notables -
Although four Bruins singles players and a doubles team suffered their first dual-match losses of the year at USC this week, other remain undefeated in team competition. Junior Annica Cooper is 5-0 in duals, including a No. 1 victory. The Bruins doubles team of freshman Petya Marinova and sophomore Cristina Popescu also owns a 5-0 dual record playing in the No. 2 and 3 slots.
Next Up - Four-Match Homestand
UCLA returns home to start a four-match homestand. The Bruins will play at Sunset Recreation Center on Saturday, Feb. 27 at Noon against No. 31 UNLV, while the men's team hosts Rice at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The month of March gets started with three home matches at the LATC, beginning with a chance to avenge last week's loss to cross-town rival USC on Wednesday, the 3rd at 1:30 p.m. The Bruins then host No. 6 Texas on the 6th and No. 10 William & Mary on the 9th.
Special Note - 25th Anniversary of Women's Athletics
The UCLA Athletic Department will celebrate the Silver Anniversary of UCLA Women's Intercollegiate Athletics on May 1, 1999. A Celebration of Champions dinner will honor the accomplishments of the UCLA Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Program and its athletes over the past 25 years.
