Men's Water Polo To Host Princeton, Play In So Cal Tournament

UCLA VS. PRINCETON: The preseason No. 1 UCLA men's water polo team (0-1) will attempt to bounce back from a season opening loss at the hands of UC Irvine as it hosts the visiting Princeton Tigers on Friday at noon.

Friday marks the second meeting between these teams. The first meeting occured at the Brown Tournament in 1990, with the Bruins prevailing, 23-5. Princeton is 3-1 after its first weekend of play. The Tigers defeated Slippery Rock, George Washington University and Bucknell by a combined 31-9. They fell to No. 16 St. Francis, 12-8. Freshman Dan McKenna leads the Tigers with nine goals, while senior Chris Gratian has eight goals.

SO CAL TOURNAMENT: On Saturday and Sunday, the Bruins will travel to Corona del Mar High School to play in the Southern California Tournament. The 12-team tournament will feature the top-12 ranked teams. On Saturday, UCLA will play Long Beach State in the first game at 12:25 p.m., and take on UC Santa Barbara at 4:45 p.m. Long Beach State is ranked seventh in the latest US Water Polo National Collegiate Division I poll. The 49ers opened their season last weekend, falling to USC 7-6 and defeating Occidental 19-1. UC Santa Barbara was ranked No. 9 in last week's poll. The Gauchos are 1-2 after dropping two games last weekend to Pepperdine (8-4) and UC Irvine (13-7). Last season, the Bruins defeated Long Beach State 13-11 in overtime, and beat the Gauchos twice, 9-3 and 13-8. The schedule on Sunday is determined by Saturday's results.

LAST WEEKEND: The Bruins opened the season with an overtime loss at UC Irvine, 9-7. UCLA's Dave Parker scored the first goal of the game, but the Anteaters answered back with two goals in the first quarter. Both teams were scoreless in the second period. After UCI scored a goal to open the third period, the Bruins answered with two straight goals by Brian Brown and Blake Wellen to tie the score at 3-3. UCI responded with two goals to take a 5-3 lead. Two quick goals by Brown to end the third period evened the score again. Two more Anteater goals gave UCI a two goal advantage with 4:12 left in the game, but the Bruins responded. Brown scored his fourth goal of the game and co-captain Adam Wright forced the game into overtime with a goal with 18 seconds left in the fourth period. However, in overtime the Anteaters prevailed, scoring goals in both overtime periods to win their season opener. UCLA's Brandon Brooks finished the game with six saves in goal.

RANKINGS: In the first regular season United States Water Polo National Collegiate Division I poll of the season, the Bruins were ranked No. 1. The Bruins' 2000 schedule includes all but one of the preseason top-10 teams.
