Cedric Bozeman Will Miss The 2004-05 Season Due To Knee Injury

Nov. 5, 2004

UCLA senior Cedric Bozeman, the Bruins' starting point guard for the last three years, will miss the 2004-05-basketball season due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

Bozeman, a 6-6, 207-pounder from Santa Ana (Mater Dei HS), was injured during practice on Thursday afternoon. He stepped on a teammate's ankle and fell to the floor on his left ankle and right knee. Tests were performed late Thursday and results became available on Friday. X-rays of his left ankle were negative, but an MRI on his right knee revealed the torn ACL.

Bozeman will require surgery once the swelling in the knee subsides. Recovery from this type of injury is generally in the eight month range.

Since he has never redshirted, Bozeman has the option of returning for the 2005-06 season, something head coach Ben Howland has already discussed with him.

As a junior co-captain last season, his first injury free campaign of his Bruin career, Bozeman was the only UCLA player to start every game (28), led the Pac-10 in assists (5.54) and led the Bruins in minutes (33.7). In his three-year Bruin career, Bozeman has appeared in 75 games (66 starts), and averaged 27.9 minutes, 6.2 points and 4.2 assists.

In 2002-03 as a sophomore, Bozeman missed the final eight games with a right shoulder injury (had surgery to correct a stability problem) and as a true freshman in 2001-02, he missed seven early season games and four additional starts, because of a right knee cartilage tear that also required surgery.

"I am saddened to report that Cedric Bozeman has a torn ACL," said Howland. "During the summer, Ced worked as hard as any player in our program to prepare for this year. His overall game has greatly improved and he has been playing well since practice started. Ced is such a great person, who has worked so hard and prepared so well for this year. This is a very tough break for Ced and a tough blow for our team."
