EUGENE, OR - UCLA improved its record to 45-6 (13-3 Pac-10) on Friday afternoon at Oregon's Howe Field, defeating the Ducks by a 2-1 score. Tairia Mims had both RBIs on the day for the Bruins, a first-inning double and a third-inning solo home run. Keira Goerl earned the win for UCLA, improving to 25-4 on the season.
Mims put a second run up on the scoreboard in the third inning, hitting her ninth home run of the season, a one-out solo shot to left field.
Oregon started a rally in the bottom of the fifth inning, with back-to-back singles from Andrea Vidlund and Janell Bergstrom. The pair would eventually advance to second and third with two outs, but were unable to score.
UCLA threatened again in the seventh inning, when Watley led off with a double to left center. She advanced to second on a fly-out to right by Mims, bringing Stacey Nuveman to the plate for her third walk of the game, this one intentional. The inning ended on a strikeout by Ramos, taking the Bruins to the bottom of the seventh with a 2-0 lead.
The Ducks would threaten in the bottom of the seventh, with a one-out double from Bergstrom, followed by a single from pinch-hitter Mari Lyn Petrick, giving Oregon runners at the corners. Bergstrom would come home on the next pitch, a passed ball, advancing Petrick to second. Rachel Tommasini then grounded out, advancing Petrick to third before center fielder Amber Hutchison grounded out to end the game.
The Bruins return to action on Saturday afternoon with a 2 pm first pitch at No. 16 Oregon State.
