No. 7 Men's Tennis Heads to the Pacific Northwest

April 11, 2006

Bruins Hit the Road to Face Oregon, No. 20 Washington . . .
The seventh-ranked UCLA men's tennis team (15-4; 4-0 Pac-10) resumes conference play on the road this week, taking on Oregon (6-13; 0-4 Pac-10) on Friday at 1:30 p.m. and No. 20 Washington (15-4; 2-1 Pac-10) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The Bruins beat both schools at the Los Angeles Tennis Center last season.

Bruins Nearing Third Pac-10 Title in Row . . .
With a pair of victories this weekend in the Pacific Northwest, UCLA will guarantee itself at least a share of the 2006 Pac-10 title, marking the Bruins' third-straight conference championship. UCLA (4-0) is the only team in the Pac-10 without a conference loss. Two wins this weekend would push the Bruins' record to 6-0 with only one league match remaining (USC on Apr. 21). Stanford (3-1), Cal (2-1) and Washington (2-1) have just one conference loss.

UCLA Downs No. 12 Stanford, No. 24 Cal . . .
The Bruins rounded out their home season in impressive fashion over the weekend, posting a pair of top-25 wins over No. 12 Stanford and No. 24 Cal. UCLA began the weekend with a 6-1 decision over Stanford, a team the Bruins lost to 4-3 back in early February. After claiming the doubles point, UCLA went on to win five of six singles matches. The Bruins had a much tougher time against Cal the following day, just edging the Golden Bears, 4-3. With the dual match tied at 3-3, Bruin junior Chris Surapol clinched the victory for UCLA with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 decision over Daniel Sebescen at court No. 4.

Kohlloeffel Becomes First UCLA No. 1 in 10 Years . . .
Junior Benjamin Kohlloeffel recently became the first UCLA player since Justin Gimelstob in 1996 to achieve a No. 1 singles ranking. Kohlloeffel, who owns an impressive 34-4 overall record this season, is listed as the top player in the Fila/ITA Singles Rankings released on April 3. It marks the first time since April 30, 1996 that a UCLA player has held the nation's No. 1 singles ranking.

UCLA in the Fila/ITA Rankings . . .
Following wins over Stanford and Cal last weekend, the Bruins moved up to No. 7 in the latest Fila/ITA Rankings released on Tuesday. It marks UCLA's highest ranking since March 6 (No. 6). Individual rankings were released last week. Benjamin Kohlloeffel (No. 1), Mathieu Dehaine (No. 78), Chris Surapol (No. 82) and Haythem Abid (No. 107) are ranked in singles. Philipp Gruendler and Kohlloeffel are ranked No. 4 in doubles. New team and individual rankings will be released next Tuesday.

Gruendler/Kohlloeffel Keep Streak Alive . . .
UCLA's No. 1 doubles team of Philipp Gruendler and Benjamin Kohlloeffel extended its winning streak to 17 in a row after posting two wins last weekend against Stanford and Cal. The duo, which is ranked fourth in the country, owns a 22-2 overall record, including a 17-0 mark in dual-match play. Additionally, they are 6-0 against ranked opponents.

West Coast Championships . . .
For the first time since UCLA hosted it in 1997, the NCAA Championships return to the West Coast in 2006, as Stanford University has been selected to host the first-ever men's and women's combined tournament. The women's team event kicks off on May 18, while the men begin action two days later on May 20.

Head Coach Billy Martin . . .
UCLA head coach Billy Martin owns a 295-57 (.838) overall record in his 13th season in Westwood. He led UCLA to its first NCAA title in more than 20 years this past May, as the Bruins pulled off a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Baylor in the 2005 NCAA final. As a player at UCLA in 1975, Martin captured the NCAA Singles Championship before going on to a very successful professional career. He is a member of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Hall of Fame.
