Athens, Ga. - Bruin junior Marcin Matkowski dropped his second round match Thursday at the NCAA Men's Tennis Individual Championships at the University of Georgia. The loss concludes the Bruins' involvement in the singles draw, as UCLA's other two entrants, Chris Lam and Tobias Clemens, fell in the first round on Wednesday.
Matkowski, unseeded in the 64-player singles draw, lost to Washington's Alex Vlaski, 6-1, 6-3. The showdown was a re-match of the Pac-10 Singles Championship, in which Matkowski won in straight sets. Vlaski is a 9-16 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Matkowski and partner Rodrigo Grilli did get some good news Thursday, as they received acceptance to the NCAA Doubles Tournament, which began today. The duo, who were alternates but got into the draw when the Texas team of Jean Simon/Jose Zhari withdrew, defeated Miami's Andrew Golub/Colin Purcell, 6-2, 6-2 in the first round. They will next face Tulane's Michael Kogan/Victor Romero in Friday's second round.
