Bruins Climb into a Sixth Place Tie at West Regionals

May 17, 2002

The UCLA men's golf team climbed into a tie for sixth place at the NCAA West Regionals, hosted by the University of New Mexico at its Championship Course.

The Bruins posted a team score of 292, four-over par, and vaulted seven places as afternoon winds blew several top-ranked teams out of contention. Nevada-Las Vegas, the only other team to match UCLA's second round score, took over first place at 582 and holds a one-shot lead entering Saturday's final round. Fresno State is second at 583, followed by Washington at 584. Arizona and San Diego State are tied for fourth at 585. The Bruins are tied with Minnesota, New Mexico and Texas at 588.

Texas, the first-round leader, ballooned Friday to 303, 15-over par. Seventh-ranked USC, which was tied for 10th after the first round, fell to 17th after also recording a 303 in the second round.

The top 10 teams, excluding ties, and the top two individual not among those teams, will advance to the NCAA Championships at Ohio State, May 29-June 1.

Individually for the Bruins, sophomore John Merrick is tied for 10th place at even par 144 after posting a three-under par score of 69 Friday. Sophomore Roy Moon shot a one-under par score of 71 and is tied for 24th at 146. Senior Parker McLachlin and freshman John Poucher are tied for 47th at five-over par 149 after carding 76s. Freshman Breene Murphy is tied for 134th at 161.

Arizona's Ricky Barnes took over the lead at seven-under par 137 after firing a tournament low score of 67 in the second round. Four players are tied for second place, including first round leader Jason Hartwick of Texas. He posted a two-over par score of 74 and is two-under for the tournament.
