No.1 Bruin Water Polo Defeats UC Santa Cruz 15-2

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Behind senior attacker Brett Ormsby's hat trick and single goals from a season high 12 different Bruins, the top-ranked UCLA water polo team defeated UC Santa Cruz 15-2 Sunday afternoon at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. With the victory, the Bruins improve to 12-2 on the season and remain a perfect 3-0 at home.

Senior Josh Hewko opened the scoring for UCLA by netting a shot past Bananna Slug goalkeeper Joe Lyons just over a minute into the first period. He was followed by senior Ted Peck, two goals from Ormsby and a score by David Pietsch as UCLA led 5-0 after one period of play.

UCLA padded its lead with four more goals in the second period while UCLA freshman goalkeeper Will Didinger held UC Santa Cruz scoreless through the half. Center defender Michael March, Ormsby, Matt Jacobs and Thomas Foley each tallied goals in the second period to send UCLA into halftime up 9-0.

In the third period with Cam Jouras in front of the net for the Slugs, freshmen Brian Jacobs and Justin Johnson each scored for an 11-0 UCLA lead. Jacobs goal, along with Tim Cherry's score later in the fourth, represented career firsts for the two freshmen.

UC Santa Cruz got on the board with 4:39 remaining in the final period when John Shippy sent a shot by UCLA goalkeeper Matt Kellogg. Three minutes later, Justin Garver added another score for the Slugs. Kellogg had entered in the fourth in place of Didinger and made his first two career saves in his first minutes of collegiate action.
