Bruin Freshman Alfred Aboya Has Left Knee Surgery

Oct. 12, 2005

UCLA freshman Alfred Aboya on Wednesday afternoon at the UCLA Medical Center underwent a successful left knee arthroscopic procedure (cartilage) performed by UCLA team physician Dr. Gerald Finerman.

An MRI this week revealed cartilage damage (lateral meniscus tear) to Aboya's left knee as he felt discomfort during the Bruins' individual workouts. The rehabilitation time is approximately 4-5 weeks. Eighteen months ago while in high school, Aboya had the same knee (left) scoped.

"We received good news from Dr. Finerman today," said Bruin head coach Ben Howland. "The repair to Alfred's left knee is less severe than his right, so the rehabilitation time will be less. This will be a quicker healing process. It's all good news, much better than expected."

This was Aboya's second knee surgery in the last three months. On July 11, Aboya had a successful right knee arthroscopic procedure at the UCLA/Santa Monica Medical Center. The hour-long surgery was performed by Dr. Finerman. Loose bodies (cartilage) were removed from Aboya's right knee. The rehabilitation time was approximately four-to-seven weeks and Aboya would have been ready for the start of practice on Friday (Oct. 14). At the time of the surgery, Aboya had been on campus attending summer school, which started June 27. While working out on his own and playing in pickup games, his right knee was giving him trouble (swelling) and the exploratory arthroscopic procedure was performed.

From Yaounde, Cameroon, the 6-8, 242-pound Aboya attended the Tilton, NH Prep Academy. Last season as a senior, Aboya led Tilton to its second consecutive New Hampshire Class B State Championship appearance and an 18-11 record. Averaging 18.0 points and 12.0 rebounds a game, Aboya is the No. 20 power forward in the U. S. and overall, No. 81 and No. 83 player in the U. S. As a junior in 2003-04, he led Tilton to the New Hampshire Class B State title and averaged 22.0 points and 12.0 rebounds a game.
