May 17, 2000

Los Angeles -- UCLA women's tennis coach Stella Sampras was named the Wilson/ITA West Region Coach of the Year on Wednesday, her first such honor since taking over as head coach for the Bruins in 1997.

In four years at UCLA, Sampras owns a 67-33 overall record, having led the Bruins to four-straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament. UCLA is currently ranked No. 9 in the country and opens up play in the NCAA Team Championships this Thursday against No. 8 Texas at Pepperdine.

Also taking home West Region honors for UCLA on Wednesday were assistant coach Rance Brown and players Sara Walker and Elizabeth Schmidt.

Brown, who is currently in his fifth season as an assistant at UCLA, was named ITA West Region Assistant Coach of the Year.

Both Walker and Schmidt took home two honors apiece. Walker, the 2000 Pac-10 singles champion, was named the ITA West Region Rookie of the Year and the ITA Player to Watch. Schmidt, a senior tri-captain on this year's UCLA team, took home two sportsmanship honors. She won the Cissie Leary Award, given to the player who displays inspiring dedication and commitment to her team, as well as the Tennis Magazine/Arthur Ashe Jr., Leadership Award, given for outstanding leadership.

Of the seven West Region awards given out Wednesday, UCLA took home six. All six UCLA winners are now eligible for ITA national awards which will be announced Sunday, May 21 at Pepperdine.
