Los Angeles, Calif. - On Saturday, the No. 3 UCLA women's water polo team defeated the No. 8 Arizona State Sun Devils, 9-3. UCLA moves its record to 15-2, 6-0 in the MPSF conference, while ASU drops to 10-4, 2-1. UCLA's next home game is on Sunday at 1:00 PM against No. 7 San Diego State.
During the first quarter of the match, both teams struggled to get shots off and neither scored. This is the first time that UCLA has not scored in the first quarter of a game since the MPSF Semi-Finals match against Stanford in the 2004 season.
In the second quarter, UCLA took charge. Brittany Rowe, playing in her first game since her return from her injury, scored the first goal at 4:42 in the quarter. On the next possession, Thalia Munro notched in another. UCLA would end the half with a 3-1 lead.
At 6:47 in the third quarter, Munro again scored for the Bruins. UCLA would add two more goals while holding the Sun Devils to one to take a 6-2 lead at the end of the third.
In the fourth, UCLA put the Sun Devils away, scoring the first two goals, including a lob shot by Kelly Rulon at 6:33. Each team would score one more goal to make the final score 9-3.
Senior Thalia Munro led the Bruins with three goals. Rowie Webster was the leading scorer for ASU with two goals. Emily Feher recorded seven saves for ASU and Caylinn Wallace also saved seven shots. There were seven ejections against UCLA for the game and five against ASU. The bruins outscored the Sun Devils 3-1 in the second, third, and fourth quarters after the scoreless first quarter.
