UCLA head women's basketball coach Kathy Olivier announced today the signing of three student-athletes to letters-of-intent - Shalada Allen and Stacy Robertson from Kilgore (TX) College and Malika Leatham from Blinn College in Brenham, TX.
The new Bruins each will be transferring from junior college and have junior class standing at UCLA. The Bruins finished the 1999-2000 season with an 18-11 record and placed fourth in the Pac-10 while making a school record third straight appearance in the NCAA tournament.
"We are bringing in players with experience, and that will put them in position to contend for playing time right away," said Olivier. "These are three extremely athletic players who are hard workers. They will each have a chance to be big contributors and are excellent additions to our program. They join three returning guards who have each earned All-Pac-10 honors (senior LaCresha Flannigan - first-team All-Pac-10 in 1999, junior Michelle Greco - honorable mention All-Pac-10 in 2000, sophomore Nicole Kaczmarski - first-team All-Freshman conference honors in 2000) during their careers to give us a high-quality nucleus for the coming season."
Allen, a 6-2 post, is from Paris, TX and attended Chisum HS prior to enrolling at Kilgore. She averaged 14.3 points and 6.9 rebounds per game last season for the Lady Rangers and ranked 10th in Region XIV in each category. Allen was named to the Region XIV all-conference team after the 1999-2000 season.
Robertson, a 6-0 forward, is from Dayton, TX and attended Dayton HS prior to enrolling at Kilgore. She was named to the 10-player All-Region XIV team as well as all-conference after averaging 14.0 points and 5.5 rebounds last season for the Lady Rangers. Robertson shot 54% from the field and connected on 50 three-point shots while shooting 37% from beyond the arc, third-best in the region.
Leatham, a 6-2 post, is from Houston, TX and attended Hastings HS prior to enrolling at Blinn. She ranked eighth in Region XIV with a 7.5 rebounds-per-game average and also scored 10.4 points per contest last season for the Buccaneers. She is known as a physical, defensive player who plays bigger than her listed size.
