No. 2 Bruins Defeat No. 1 Stanford for MPSF Championship

Los Angeles - The No. 2 Bruins defeated No. 1 Stanford 11-7 in the MPSF Championship game at the McDonald's Swim Stadium, located on the USC campus. It was the Bruins' first victory over Stanford this season. The victory clinches an automatic bid for UCLA to the NCAA Championships, which will be held May 11-12 at the McDonald's Swim Stadium.

Stanford got out to a fast start in the game, leading 2-0 at the end of the first quarter on goals by Margie Dingeldein. Junior Jessica Lopez scored her first goal of the game for the Bruins with 5:36.22 to go in the second quarter. Other Bruins scorers in the quarter were Thalia Munro and Maureen Flanagan. Stanford's Ellen Estes also scored in the second quarter, tying the score at 3-3 at the half.

In the third quarter, Stanford's Brenda Villa scored a goal, putting the Cardinal ahead 4-3. Kristyn Pulver netted a goal, tying the game at 4-4. Cardinal Jeanine Jackson netted a goal, but Pulver answered, tying the game at 5-5. Junior Ashley Stachowski netted a goal, giving the Bruins their first lead of the game, 6-5. Munro scored her second goal, putting UCLA up by two over Stanford. In the fourth quarter, the Bruins scored four goals to Stanford's two. Seniors Jenny Lamb and Kelly Heuchan each netted a goal, and Lopez added two more.

Lopez led the Bruins scoring effort with three goals. Munro and Pulver each netted a pair of goals. Also scoring for the Bruins were Flanagan, Ashley Stachowski, Lamb and Heuchan. Junior goalkeeper Jaime Hipp had four saves.

The NCAA Championships will be held May 11-12 at USC's McDonald's Swim Stadium. In addition to UCLA, Loyola Marymount and Michigan gained automatic bids to the championships. The at large team will be announced tomorrow, April 29, at 8:00 AM.
