LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. - The World Champion U.S. women's water polo team announced its Olympic roster of 13 players on June 2. Six former and current Bruins were named to the roster. Current Bruins who redshirted the 2004 season, Natalie Golda, Thalia Munro, Kelly Rulon and Amber Stachowski join alumnae Robin Beauregard and Nicolle Payne in representing the United States at Athens. Team USA, which became only the second non-European team to win gold at the World Championships with an 8-6 win over Italy last summer in Barcelona, is the favorite for Olympic gold heading into Athens.
Goalkeeper Nicolle Payne, UCLA's all-time leader in saves and goals-against-average will provide a tag-time in the cage with Jackie Frank. Payne has 10 years of competition with Team USA under her cap, including the 2000 Olympic Games and she is one of the most exciting and athletics goalies in the women's game today.
Robin Beauregard the captain of UCLA's 2003 NCAA Championship Team and member of the 2000 Olympic team and Natalie Golda, who redshirted the 2004 season are two of Team USA's top defenders. Amber Stachowski, who redshirted the 2003 and 2004 seasons and was a member of the 2003 World Championship team will see playing time at the defender position. Golda and Stachowski will also likely see playing time at the center forward position.
Kelly Rulon a member of UCLA's 2003 NCAA Championship Team, who redshirted the 2004 season after joining Team USA in the winter will join Thalia Munro, who redshirted the 2003 and 2004 seasons at the Attacker position.
This Olympics, teams are broken into two different brackets, with Team USA falling into Group B. That opens the competition with the World Champs having to get through Russia, Hungary and Canada to claim the top spot in its draw. The No. 2 world power, Italy, sits in Group A with Greece, Kazakhstan and defending Olympic gold-medalist Australia.
Team USA will compete at the Holiday Cup from June 17-19 at the Coggan Family Aquatic Complex in La Jolla, California and at a number of other prominent tournaments and games against top teams around the world. The team will then travel to Athens, Greece for the 2004 Olympic Games, from August 16-26.
